Marketing Outside of Search Engines

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

A client emailed me today and was sick to his stomach because sales are down on Google. That his pay-per-click campaign only received 3 clicks yesterday. It seems he does not know what to do anymore.  Here’s my advice to him:

Maybe you’re doing too many changes…on and off.  Try not to chase the sales – it will almost always elude you.  Make the changes minimal and monitor it for weeks at a time.  The system needs to learn your pattern.  But if too many changes too many times, it can’t determine your pattern – neither will the customers.

If the ads and keywords worked before – keep it that way.  Just because the sales went down – it does not mean the ads and keywords no longer works.  It’s just part of the cycle.  Don’t fall into the Google trap!  During the down cycle, google expects you to increase your bid and your budget – but the system still has to serve the others (your competitors).  So, it is a moot effort to adjust your budget and bids – the results will be the same.

You also needs to start considering other marketing methods…e.g. online trade magazines, facebook pay per click, mailing out brochures to interior designers, cabinet manufacturers, jewelry shops and manufacturers, etc.  Don’t rely solely on google, bing and yahoo.  By creating a demand outside of search engines, all search engines can do is give in to the demand – meaning if the people you are communicating with outside of search engines are searching for you or going to your site directly, the search engines will have to give in and display your ads in order to meet consumer demands on search engines to deliver the right information.

Hang in there!

Online Marketing Companies, an Industry Full of Scams

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

A long time and awesome client emailed me today about an email offer he received from an online marketing company telling him that they can get his website up on search engine results like Google, Bing, Yahoo and more.  We all receive this kind of unsolicited email all the time.  After reviewing the email and read up on the marketing companies background and marketing approach, below is my reply to his request:

Ignore these marketing offers!!  They are just going to take your money and nothing will happen.  In fact, in most cases, websites that do employ these marketing companies end up being banned from search engines because of unscrupulous marketing tactics and borderline methods or sometimes totally out of the ballpark illegal tactics i.e. spamming emails and mirrored pages.

Your company is a target because they see that you’re using Google’s pay-per-click program – and they are aware that 80% of the websites involved in pay-per-click are upset about their results – therefore, they become prey to these types of companies who take advantage of the situation.

Your website’s ranking is AWESOME!!!  I just did a quick test – and I’m sure I can back this up with reports as well – using the keyword phrase workover rigs for sale – and your site is number 2 from the top of the page pay-per-click section and again number 2 in the organic listing.  You don’t need to do anything to this site other than update the listings from time to time which you already do.

I’ve reviewed and tested a lot of these companies and 90% of them – even the biggest brand name companies  – are employing methods that do not provide any benefit to the client.  It’s all about profit not service.  It’s unbelievable.

If you’re tempted – before you sign up – please let me look it over first.  I’ll be more than happy to do it to make sure their methods are sound and are within search engine guidelines.

Hurray! FCC Adopts Net Neutrality Rules.

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

I’m in a celebratory mood now that FCC has sided with adopting the Net Neutrality rules that have been running the Internet since it became available for use by the general public in 1997 - free for all to see and hear; free of censorship from all angles top to bottom; promoting Internet freedom and creativity without prejudice.  The bottom line, the Internet has been preserved as is. The definition of what Net Neutrality varies between individuals but overall, the general public agrees that corporations controlling what we see online is not what we want.  The flip side of Net Neutrality is control which boils down to censorship for profit.

Which is the best browser – IE, Firefox, Safari or Chrome?

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

I read a recent article on PCWorld Magazine October 2010 issue regarding common myths about technologies and one of them was browser vulnerabilities.  According to the article, they first reviewed Symantec’s twice-yearly Internet Security Thread Report which indicates the total number of vulnerabilities for 2009.  Firefox had the most at 169, followed by Safari coming in at 94, Internet Explorer (IE) at 45 and Google Chrome at 41.

Congress Legalized Gambling Over the Internet

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Webmasters, Web Developers and alike have always been in a tight spot whenever a client presents a project that involves online gaming or the promotion of online gaming.  The tight spot is not knowing exactly what the law allows and what it does not.  Even though it is not the job of the webmaster to know about the law it is almost always good to be knowledgeable on the subject.

On Wednesday, July 26, 2010, Congress took a step forward in approving the bill that would allow for legalized gambling over the Internet.
