FROM BUSINESS OUTLINE (PAPER) TO DESIGN CODES (WEB PAGES OR SOFTWARE)

Back in the old days (between 1997-2001) most web sites were an electronic version of the company's print products like brochures, catalog or digital magazine. Simplistic. Straightforward. Easy to Develop. But as new functions and features become even more popular, which means technology will become even more sophisticated and deeply integrated with the world wide web, the demand for an even more interactive web site are becoming the norm on the Internet. Membership driven web sites, downloading/uploading of media, live streaming video, account login, social networking features and software plug ins are just some of the few popular functionalities now in very high demand. In the past and still quite common even today (2010), a business network and its web site are usually not integrated and managed together but rather separately. Today, however, more and more are opting to integrate both systems as one big unit - in communications, accounting, tracking, customer service, sales and more. Therefore, a more complex web site will require better planning on paper first becomes an even more critical part of the design process. Critical enough that designing and developing a web site will be a good reflection of the time spent on preparation. For the site to be considered a good web site, it would have to be excellent or even flawless in its execution of the business plan.

Here are some of the basic problems you need to be aware of when executing a business plan: 1) technology shifts; 2)lack of developer expertise and experience; 3) unrealistic time lines; and 4) lack of methodology and consideration for medium restrictions. Sometimes, a web site developed in one technology must be redone in another technology in a matter of months. Developers need to understand the core technologies of the web before building sites. Designers should understand network, server and protocol issues that may affect web design. This includes browsers and bandwidth to various programming languages, Internet standards and protocols. But not just what these can do for your web site but also its limitations.

Write your business plan with the user in mind - your target market. Start small and focus on your niche rather than trying to please everyone with everything.
